ZeroCircle Launches Natural Polymer Coating for Heat-Sealable Paper Packaging

ZeroCircle has launched a heat-sealable coating made from natural polymers, further expanding its portfolio of plastic-free materials for paper-based packaging.

The innovation is designed to replace conventional synthetic plastic coatings while delivering the performance required for modern flexible and paper packaging applications.

The newly developed coating is formulated from bio-derived natural polymers and builds on the company’s expertise in seaweed-based biomaterials. It is engineered to provide both barrier protection and heat-sealing capability without the use of petroleum-based plastics.

One of the key advantages of the coating is its compatibility with existing heat-sealing processes, enabling coated paper and paperboard to be converted into packaging formats such as pouches, sachets, wraps and other sealed paper structures. This allows manufacturers to retain efficient production methods while transitioning to more sustainable materials.

ZeroCircle’s material platform is centred on plastic-free and compostable packaging solutions. According to the company, its natural polymer technology offers essential packaging properties including water resistance, oxygen barrier performance and reliable heat sealability, while remaining suitable for biological end-of-life pathways.

The development is particularly significant for the food packaging industry, where demand is rising for alternatives to plastic-coated paper. Natural polymer coatings can provide the functional barriers needed for product protection while supporting the recyclability or compostability of paper-based packaging, depending on the final package design and local waste management systems.

Beyond coatings, ZeroCircle’s product portfolio includes grease-resistant coated paper and paperboard, food trays, clamshell containers and other seaweed-based packaging solutions. Heat-sealable coatings and grease-resistant heat-sealed pouches are also among the company’s products currently under development.

This latest innovation highlights the growing role of bio-based materials in replacing conventional synthetic polymers. By combining natural polymer chemistry with industrial heat-sealing performance, ZeroCircle is addressing one of the key technical challenges in advancing truly plastic-free paper packaging.
