Mondelēz International has introduced FSC-certified paper trays across its flagship biscuit portfolio in Europe, replacing rigid PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic trays as part of its sustainable packaging strategy.
The transition covers more than 115 biscuit products sold under eight major brands, including Cadbury, Chips Ahoy!, Freia, Lacta, and Marabou, across over 25 European markets such as the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Poland, and the Nordic countries.
The initiative applies to approximately 28,000 tonnes of biscuits produced annually and is expected to eliminate around 2,200 tonnes of virgin plastic each year—an estimated 80% reduction compared to the previous tray design. The project represents one of Mondelēz’s largest packaging transformations within its European biscuits business.
The paper tray rollout builds on the company’s earlier sustainability efforts in the UK, including the launch of paper tubs for Cadbury Heroes and paper outer packaging for Cadbury Animals and Mini Fingers multipacks. According to Olivier Kintzig, Europe Biscuits Packaging Director, the transition required redesigning packaging structures, manufacturing processes, and logistics to deliver a scalable, system-wide solution that reduces plastic while maintaining product quality and distribution efficiency.
