Mondi has developed an optimized packaging concept for the water heater product range of its long-standing customer, STIEBEL ELTRON.
The new solution is designed to simplify the company’s packaging portfolio while maintaining reliable product protection.
STIEBEL ELTRON previously used around 150 different packaging variants. As part of its packaging redesign, Mondi analyzed the existing corrugated packaging solutions and grouped them according to product weight and transportation requirements.
This approach enabled Mondi to identify suitable brown corrugated board grades for different product groups. As a result, the number of different corrugated board grades required was reduced by more than 75 percent.
The redesigned packaging also replaces four-colour printed designs with a modern approach using white digital printing on brown corrugated board. This allows different packaging designs and print volumes to be produced using the same material base, helping simplify production.
White digital printing also enables clear reproduction of fine details, including small text, QR codes and barcodes. Multiple packaging variants can be produced in a single production run, helping reduce changeover requirements and avoid unnecessary overproduction.
The standardized packaging concept gives STIEBEL ELTRON greater flexibility when introducing new packaging designs and future products. Existing material specifications can be used for new designs, reducing the need for additional box testing and helping streamline production processes.
According to STIEBEL ELTRON, the collaboration with Mondi has helped reduce packaging complexity while improving operational efficiency. The use of digital printing also provides greater flexibility to adapt packaging designs for different markets and product launches.
The project demonstrates how combining standardized corrugated board grades with digital printing technology can help companies manage complex packaging portfolios more efficiently while maintaining product protection and consistent branding.
