ITC Limited has taken a significant step in strengthening its presence in India’s paper and packaging industry by completing the acquisition of the Century Pulp & Paper business from Aditya Birla Real Estate Limited.
Effective August 1, 2026, the transaction brings one of the country’s established integrated pulp and paper manufacturing operations into ITC’s Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable growth and value-added paper products.
The acquisition represents more than a change in ownership. It reflects the continuing consolidation within the Indian paper industry, where leading manufacturers are pursuing scale, operational efficiency and product diversification to remain competitive in both domestic and export markets. With demand for packaging grades, specialty papers and sustainable fibre-based solutions continuing to rise, investments in integrated manufacturing assets have become increasingly important.
Century Pulp & Paper has built a strong reputation over the years with its diversified product portfolio, integrated manufacturing capabilities and established customer base across printing and writing papers, tissue, packaging boards and specialty grades. The addition of these capabilities is expected to complement ITC’s existing strengths in paperboards, specialty papers and sustainable packaging solutions while broadening its manufacturing footprint.
From an industry perspective, the acquisition comes at a time when Indian paper manufacturers are navigating changing market dynamics. Rising demand for fibre-based packaging, increasing emphasis on import substitution, evolving environmental regulations and growing export opportunities are encouraging companies to invest in modern production facilities and improve operational efficiencies. Strategic acquisitions such as this enable manufacturers to accelerate growth while leveraging existing infrastructure and technical expertise.
The integration of Century Pulp & Paper is also expected to enhance ITC’s access to raw material resources, improve production flexibility and strengthen supply chain resilience. As businesses increasingly seek reliable domestic sourcing for paper and packaging materials, larger integrated producers are likely to benefit from economies of scale and wider product offerings.
For customers, the consolidation may translate into a broader portfolio of products, improved service capabilities and greater investment in innovation. The combined strengths of the two businesses could support the development of advanced paper g rades, sustainable packaging materials and value-added products catering to sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, e-commerce, publishing and industrial packaging.
The acquisition also highlights the growing confidence in India’s pulp and paper sector despite global economic uncertainties. While the industry continues to face challenges such as volatile raw material prices, energy costs and increasing environmental compliance requirements, long-term fundamentals remain encouraging. Urbanisation, expanding organised retail, digital commerce and the shift towards recyclable packaging continue to create new opportunities for growth.
As ITC integrates Century Pulp & Paper into its operations, industry stakeholders will closely watch how the company leverages the acquired assets to improve productivity, enhance sustainability initiatives and strengthen its competitive position. The move is expected to contribute positively to India’s evolving paper manufacturing landscape while supporting the country’s broader objective of developing globally competitive, sustainable manufacturing capabilities.
For the Indian pulp and paper industry, this acquisition stands as another indication that strategic investments, operational integration and sustainable manufacturing will remain key drivers of growth in the years ahead.
